Do you know the movie ‘Mad Max’? and have you ever watched it? I watched it early this month in my home. It is a 1979 Australian dystopian action film, starring Mel Gibson. According to wikipedia, It became a top-grossing Australian film, holding the Guinness record for most profitable film for decades and has been credited for further opening up the global market to Australian New Wave films.
However as the age changed, it is boring for me to watch a 1970s film. But I could recognize that it would get success in the past. It did too. Then later I found that they continue filming, Mad Max 2 (a.k.a. The Road Warrior) in 1981 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985. The budget for first Mad Max is A$1.69 million according to 2012 dollar price. the box office is A$421.2 million in 2012 dollar price. So the profit is more than 400 times. Mad Max 2 budget is A$4.5 million and box office is A$10,847,491 (over 10 million only). Mad Max 3 budget is $12 million, and box office, $36,230,219 (over 3.6 million).
The fact showed that it is difficult to get a success again that we got in the past. The director, George Miller believed that he would get success again in box office, but not too much. He could not chase the success again. It also showed that company’s success is also the reason company will get failed in the future. A winning company got confidence that will make them fail. One more thing is about innovation. Batman’s film series is succeeding because their script is changed according to time and situation. Mad Max didn’t change too much, except the technology used in film. Now Mad Max is producing a fourth installment, Mad Max: Fury Road starring Tom Hardy as Max, is scheduled to screen in May 2015. Let’s see what will happen!
