I was invited to involve in panel discussion about digital revolution in Myanmar at Digital Media Inside Out event, organised by Professional Marketer Association in Myanmar.
Professional Marketer Association is made by local professional markers who are guru in marketing field. Some are working at Ooredoo and some are working at other great companies such as Unilever, Samsung, etc. They’ve been doing great events in Myanmar concerning about marketing and other economic matters.
Before concluding the discussion, I got an interesting question from a journalist from Kamaryut media. Kamaryut media is a local online media organisation which develop own content and publish online. He asked two questions. The first is how we can decide if the media is listed or unlisted in local. The second is if advertisers should advertise on the platforms which don’t value copyright and intellectual property law.
How to be listed media in Myanmar
To be a listed media in Myanmar, we usually need to register at ministry of information. It’s so easy to talk. But if to go in the process of registering, it’s a bit time consuming and even money. But to listed your online media in Myanmar, there is no places yet to do for it. We usually do here like registering the company as a trading and service company and then include the website one of the product. But I can’t grantees that would be always true. It’s always good to register your brand name and logo or you will get cheated by other companies copying your brand and content.
If marketers/ advertisers should advertise on unfaithful platforms
Websites and Facebook pages which copy news and articles from other websites are many in Myanmar. local media companies are usually get cheated by such sites and pages. The website, Thit Htoo Lwin, is one of the most popular media which publish news and article by copying from other media websites. The website then got successful and is getting lots of income. On the other side, websites such as Kamaryut media which develop own content are not doing well in generating income. So the question came out if advertisers should advertise on unfaithful platforms such as Thit Htoo Lwin and others.
I would say yes. To be listed or not listed and to be protected by law for copyright are business of government. It’s not business of advertisers. It’s not wrong that marketers will advertise on platform where mass of viewers are existing. Media companies have no right to claim about it unless they are closed friends.
If government is still not helping, only one solution good media can do is trying to reach to mass of people by using online marketing strategy. I also believe that media which copy content will not live long on internet. They will die one day. It’s just a matter of time.
You just need to ignore the barking dogs while trying to reach your goal. Government will do their business and you just need to do the best on what you are to do.
