From June 19th to 21st 2017, 10 of Myanmar’s best seed stage startups chosen by Seedstar and local startup community experts will meet expert local and international mentors and compete to represent Myanmar at both the Seedstars Asia Regional Summit and at the global Seedstars Summit in Switzerland.
Seedstars World, the global seed-stage startup competition for emerging markets and fast-growing startup scenes is coming to Myanmar for the 3rd time. Seedstars World will not only be hosting a dynamic pitching event at AYA Bank on the 21st of June, but will also hold an exclusive two day bootcamp in cooperation with Omidyar Network. This bootcamp will feature outstanding local and international entrepreneurs, mentors, and partners, who will support the startups with growth hacking, team dynamics, and business models over the course of two days.
Entrepreneurship is on the rise in Myanmar, with a significant increase in startup applications this year.
Liberating the telecommunication market in 2014, there are already now more active SIM cards than inhabitants in Myanmar. This opens up vast opportunities, which have also spurred a new wave of entrepreneurs. However, the local entrepreneurial scene is still young. With such a nascent ecosystem, mentoring plays an especially important role in supporting the development of high-growth, sustainable startups. For this, Myanmar startups have to take advantage of local talent and experience as well as reach out to international players. Connecting startups with industry experts, strategic partners, and seasoned entrepreneurs is more important than simply providing capital. Omidyar shares this vision, and the Seedstars Bootcamp seeks to provide maximum impact to the ecosystem in this way.
On the 21st of June, the top 8 seed stage startups in Myanmar will show of their newly refined skills at Seedstars Yangon. They will be invited to pitch to claim the title of Myanmar’s most promising tech startup and receive all expenses-paid trips to both the Seedstars Asia Regional Summit and the Seedstars Global Summit in Switzerland. In line with its mission to shine a spotlight on tech entrepreneurs from emerging markets, Seedstars World is travelling to more than 70 countries in 2017 to identify the best seed-stage entrepreneurs and provide them with the opportunity to win up to USD 1 million, and network with investors and mentors from around the world at the Seedstars Summit.
Previous Seedstars World competition participants have raised over USD 61M collectively, providing employment to more than 800 people worldwide. With a strong network of international partners such as BBVA, Merck, Enel, TRECC, Standard Bank, and Deloitte, Seedstars World is looking for innovative startups that solve regional issues and develop profitable products for the global market, with the aim of supporting the growth of these businesses. The companies selected to pitch at the Seedstars Yangon event need to be less than 2 years old, have raised less than USD 500,000 in funding and have built a minimum viable product, ideally with existing traction.
“Seedstars World is a platform connecting investors to the next generation of entrepreneurs, outside of Silicon Valley and Western Europe. This will be our 3rd time organizing our event in Yangon, and given the rapidly rising nature of the startup ecosystem, we expect to discover a wealth of good startups.” explains Nick Feneck, Regional Manager at Seedstars World, “We are excited to be coming back, and cannot wait to discover this year’s most promising tech startups from Myanmar.”
In order to provide local entrepreneurs with this opportunity and aiming to deliver the best possible event, Seedstars World is working closely with Omidyar Network, AYA Bank, and Ooredoo. Further support is provided by Thura Swiss, Phandeeyar, Strategy First, and Internet Journal in sourcing the best startups in Myanmar.
