Visited Mira Costa High School in LA to explore how digital media is being taught in high school in U.S. U.S kids are so lucky today. Due to the best arrangement of government and consitution foundation, kids get chance to learn everything in hand and in real world.
They have practical rooms for every subject. We visited the practical room of digital media learning students. They are st high school student. They still have long way to go in their education career. They are under 18. But I can say their skil is in a level of working. Their practical room is not just a practical room. It is a digital studio which brocast video news in live version. They publish in their website. They have global audience.
Kids are allowed to create whatever story they like. They don’t even need permission from their teacher. Well, their teacher, Michael Hernandez is also an Apple distinguished educator, Google for education certified innovator. He taught them well for sure. Kids are taking video, ediging video, live streaming video, news anchoring and so other things need to be done for a TV channel and digital studio. They all are taught for every skills they need for such a media. They all can do all tasks even including reporting news outside world and even interviewing to high ranking people in the country.
Mira is a public high school. There are many public high school in U.S. Good eudcation system make U.S stronger than other countries. Kids don’t see projects as homework. They see it as a exciting thing to do
Someone from IVLP raised a question if they like journalism career. Well, some are not really going into journalism career. They just do it because it is a project for them, but they do it very happily and they like to do it. A kid answered –
“I love journalism because it gives me a voice. My voice is making a change to people. I create a story and people discuss about it. Then changes happen. That’s why I like journalism. It is my passion”
(sorry if I misinterpreted the last quote. But what she meant was that too). 🙂
